Seventeen people have gone missing after being likely swept into a river or buried in mud by a landslide in southwestern China.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Wednesday's landslide triggered by heavy rains in Yunnan province left another person injured.

It says more than 140 rescuers, using excavators, fire trucks and ambulances, are searching the site of the landslide, which lies about 550 metres (yards) from the Nujiang river.

The report cites the Communist Party chief of Fugong county as saying that some of the missing people may have been carried away by the river or buried under debris.

Local officials could not immediately be reached by phone Wednesday.
