Simon Ostrovsky, the American journalist captured by pro-Russian gunmen in eastern Ukraine, has been freed.

"Vice News is delighted to confirm that our colleague and friend Simon Ostrovsky has been safely released and is in good health," read a statement on the website of his employer, Vice News, on Thursday.

CBC's Jean-Francois Belanger tweeted that Ostrovsky was in a CBC car en route to Dontetsk.

Ostrovsky had not been seen since early Tuesday. He has been covering the crisis in Ukraine for weeks and was reporting about groups of masked gunmen seizing government buildings in one eastern Ukrainian city after another.
