Omar Khadr's Guantanamo Bay war-crimes trial is on hold for a month as the only man who can defend him in court is medevaced off the base.

Lieutenant-Colonel Jon Jackson, Mr. Khadr's military-appointed lawyer (photo below), collapsed in court during cross-examination Thursday, apparently from pain possibly connected to gallbladder surgery he had six weeks ago. A spokesman for the defence counsel said Friday morning he's being airlifted out of Guantanamo, likely to Walter Reed army medical centre.

Globe reporter Anna Mehler Paperny reports from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on what happened.
