The gift: Raising $500,000

The cause: The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation

Ever since he was a teenager, Harley Mintz has had long hair, sometimes letting it run halfway down his back.

But next month, Mr. Mintz, 64, will shave all off his curly locks in aid of Toronto's Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. It won't be easy.

"I love my hair," said Mr. Mintz, who is a partner and vice-chairman of Deloitte Canada. "My wife asked me how long it would take to grow back and when I told her four months, she said 'Where are you going to live for those four months?'"

Mr. Mintz is hoping the close shave – which takes place Feb. 4 – will help to raise $500,000 for the hospital. And he is one of four businessmen taking up the hair cut challenge to raise $1.2-million in total.

Cancer "touches everybody," he said. "I just couldn't say no."

He has already lined up dozens of donors, many of whom just can't wait to see him shorn. "They tell me 'Just to see you cut your hair is worth it to me.'"
