The donors: Glen and Sharon Demetrioff, and employees of DMT Development Systems Group

The gift: More than $400,000 and climbing

The causes: Various charities

Shortly after Glen Demetrioff and his wife Sharon founded Winnipeg-based DMT Development Systems Group Inc. in 1996, they began talking to employees about how to donate money to local charities.

"We're all pretty fortunate to have work and homes, so we began talking about what we could do," said Mr. Demetrioff, who co-owns the company with his wife.

The discussion led to an annual fundraising exercise in which the company's 125 employees decide which charity to support. Each fall, they meet with non-profit representatives, select a cause to back and then gather donations. The company matches the amount raised by staff.

This past Christmas, the group donated $78,000 to the local branch of the Children's Wish Foundation and, in 2013, they contributed $60,000 to the Children's Hospital Foundation.

Mr. Demetrioff said DMT, which specializes in Web-based systems for auto companies and dealers, has donated more than $400,000 since the annual drive began 12 years ago.

"It has been very rewarding in many ways," he added. "We take so many things for granted and there's an ability for people to do so much more."
