Recruiting? Point the camera at candidates

In an age of Skype and You Tube, are you taking advantage of video in your recruiting efforts? Josh Tolan, who is on the leading edge of this trend as chief executive officer of Spark Hire, a video-powered hiring network, says the current recruiting method is inefficient and too costly. On mashable.com, he says you can shorten the hiring process and find top people by using videos to supplement or supplant traditional techniques:

Video résumés: Encourage candidates to submit video résumés. This will allow you to assess such soft skills as communications ability and personality fit earlier in the process, saving you a phone call or in-person meeting with someone who is clearly wrong for the post.

Recorded interviews: Instead of spending a half-hour on the phone interviewing an applicant, send some questions, and have the person record his or her answers on video. "It's like combining the typical application process with a normal interview. Best of all, these videos can be viewed by anyone on the team at any time, making interviews easy to fit into even the busiest schedule," he says.

Live interviews: Avoid travel, by you or the candidate, and schedule a live video interview. Fewer hassles; same insights.
