An aboriginal band that has been fighting for a reserve for decades has filed an injunction against a Calgary energy company to stop it from drilling on lands they seek to claim.

The lawsuit, filed by the Lubicon First Nation against Penn West Petroleum Ltd., seeks to stop all fracking activity on lands around Haig Lake.

The band says that area in north central Alberta is considered culturally important.

It was also part of a proposed 1988 settlement to the band's land claim, a deal the Alberta government backed out of seven years later.

Since then, the band's leadership has split into one group recognized by the federal government and one group that isn't.

Monday's action has been brought by the second group.

In June, the First Nation filed a lawsuit against the federal government asking for a reserve and compensation for resources removed from its traditional lands.
