A small Canadian gold company, Detour Gold Corp., has been the victim of a cyber attack.
The company's server was hacked, potentially exposing reams of sensitive information such as credit card numbers and employees' medical records.
"There has been a breach of Detour Gold's IT systems," said a Detour spokeswoman. "We are working with the police."
According to a report on the website www.databreaches.net, Russian hackers dumped swaths of Detour's confidential data on an undisclosed url, as retribution for Canada's economic penalties against Russia.
The hackers, called the "angels_of_truth," claim that it still has access to Detour's network and has downloaded huge files that includes Detour's deals, credit card numbers and employees' social insurance numbers, according to the report.
Detour operates one gold mine in Ontario. It was rumoured to be a takeover target after another single-mine Canadian company was embroiled in takeover battle in 2014.
Detour said it was "continuing to assess the situation" and determine what information was released.
