John Hofmeister is the retired president of Royal Dutch Shell's U.S. operations, and author of the book, Why We Hate the Oil Companies, in which he argues for a pragmatic approach to an essential industry. He is founder of Washington-based Citizens for Affordable Energy, a public education group that promotes reliance on a "range of affordable energy supplies." Mr. Hofmeister has warned against the government over-reacting to BP PLC's blowout by shutting down the entire offshore industry.
