Never mind that there are over one million references to it on the worldwide web. The word "HTTP" -- or Hypertext Transfer Protocol, found at the beginning of most web addresses -- is the most baffling high-tech buzzword around.
The Global Language Monitor, a group which keeps track of word use, released on Wednesday a list of the most confusing yet frequently-used technology terms.
HTTP topped the list, followed by VoIP, known as voice over Internet protocol, and megapixel. Simply put, VoIP is "web telephony" or Internet-based phone products, while megapixel is computer-talk for "picture element," the group said.
"The high tech realm remains an incubator of great ideas and, at the same time, mass confusion. The industry, with rare exception, has never mastered the basics of translating new products and services into everyday language," Global Language Monitor said in a release on its website.
The group said it used an algorithm to tracks specific high-tech buzzwords and phrases in the media and on the Internet in early March.
Other confusing high-tech words used often include plasma, robust, worm and emoticon.
