RL Solutions designs healthcare software for patient feedback, incident reporting & risk management, infection surveillance and claims management.

When you walk off the elevator, the office looks "very traditional," says Sanjay Malaviya, president and CEO of RL Solutions. "But as you walk around, it feels more like home."

But how many 'homes' have a full-size gym, ping pong stadium and Irish pub?

RL Solutions is a Toronto-based company that designs healthcare software for patient feedback, incident reporting and risk management, infection surveillance and claims management. Its office is located on the 22nd and 23rd floors of the Toronto Star building downtown.

"We're very youthful. Not necessarily in age, but youthful in our approach," says Mr. Malaviya. Where some companies might pay part of a gym membership, RL Solutions took it a step further by building a 2,000-square-foot gymnasium. The space is complete with lockers, the latest machines, free weights and shower room.

Another surprising feature of RL Solutions' space is its ping pong stadium, which Mr. Malaviya admits "is probably used too much." Mr. Malaviya admits.

Every year, the company holds a tournament in which 90 or more people sign up. It can take more than two months to get through the bracket.

"The passion for ping pong in this company is insane!" says Mr. Malaviya.

As if a full gym and ping pong stadium weren't enough to keep the employees happy, Mr. Malaviya saves the best for last.

"We have a pub in our office...a real Irish pub," he says. He explains that when the designers came up with the idea to build a secret door between his office and the pub, he said it was an offer he couldn't refuse.

The pub features a fine Scotch lounge, shuffleboard, pool table, golf simulator and bar with seating for 15 stools. There are two taps for beer and six fridges stocked with beer, wine and soft drinks.

What may seem like a frivolous expenditure for some companies, is an incredibly valuable asset for RL Solutions. "[The pub] is heavily used ... and the key to having an asset like that in your office is hiring really good people."
