CI Financial Corp. is losing one of its main bond fund managers to a rival amid high demand for fixed-income experts who can provide returns to investors desperate for yield.

James Dutkiewicz, CI's former vice president of portfolio management and portfolio manager with Signature Global Advisors, will begin a new role with Sentry Select Capital Inc. soon, said people familiar with the transition.

Mr. Dutkiewicz joined CI , one of Canada's largest investment management companies, a decade ago. He has grown with the company through its expansion and several acquisitions. The Signature Global Advisors group that he was part of manages over $20-billion across all asset classes, including fixed income and equities. In total, CI Financial had approximately $96-billion in assets as of the end of March.

One of Mr. Dutkiewicz's mandates was managing the CI Signature Canadian Bond Fund. The Globe's rundown on that fund's performance lives here.

In Sentry, he's joining a firm well-known for its focus on income-producing investments. Sentry has a long history as a first mover in yield funds, having been early to the game in markets such as income trusts and real estate investment trusts.

Prior to joining CI, Mr. Dutkiewicz worked for YMG Capital Management Inc. as a corporate bond analyst, and on the bond desk at Merrill Lynch Canada.
