Friends and family of Brad Griffiths have begun a scholarship in his memory after the Bay Street dealmaker perished in a boating accident.
Mr. Griffiths was a commerce graduate of University of Toronto, so it's fitting that the the scholarship will be for students at the university's Rotman School of Management.
The Rotman School said the "Bradley David Griffiths Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to an MBA student at the Rotman School with a background or interest in pursuing a career in finance, investment banking or energy."
There's a good chance that the recipients will study some of his deals, as Mr. Griffiths was long an innovator in capital markets. (For a great look at his life, here's a recent story from the Globe.)
Mr. Griffiths is perhaps best known as the G in GMP Capital Inc., which began as Griffiths McBurney, but he had senior roles all over Bay Street, and had most recently started an energy company.
Mr. Griffiths went boating last month near his cottage on Lake Joseph, in cottage country north of Toronto, and never returned. After a long search, his body was recovered a few days later.
There will be a memorial service in his honour Wednesday. It will begin at 4 p.m., when markets close, on the old Toronto Stock Exchange trading floor, now known as the Design Exchange.
