OMERS Ventures, the pension's fund new venture capital arm, has hired Derek Smyth as a managing director.

Prior to joining OMERS, Mr. Smyth co-managed two venture capital funds at Edgestone Capital Partners, and was previously president and chief executive officer of Bridgewater Systems, which was bought by Amdocs in June.

This is the second big senior hire for OMERS is as many weeks. Earlier this month the firm announced it is bringing on Howard Gwin as a managing director to focus on technology.

OMERS launched its $180-million venture capital fund in October, and is led by John Ruffolo.
