Eagan, Minn.-based Transport America has a network that includes 12 terminals throughout the U.S. and employs about 2,000 staff and independent contractors. It operates about 1,500 tractors and about 4,400 trailers.

The deal is expected to close near the end of the month.

The acquisition will provide TransForce with a critical mass in the truckload carriage and logistics service sector in the U.S., said TransForce chairman, president and chief executive officer Alain Bédard.

TransForce operates trucking, package delivery, logistics and waste management services and has the courier brands Loomis, Canpar and ICS.

It has acquired about 140 businesses over the past 15 years and last year posted revenue of $1.3-billion (Canadian).

The company has been shifting its focus to e-commerce and higher-margin package and courier operations in recent years.
