The Toronto Blue Jays have decided on their fifth starter in their rotation and it is Drew Hutchison.
The 21-year-old right-hander will make his major-league debut on Saturday in Kansas City against the Royals.
Toronto manager John Farrell made the announcement Thursday night after the Tampa Bay Rays pounded Toronto 9-4 at Rogers Centre.
With all the off-days that Blue Jays have enjoyed at the start of the season they have been able to go with just a four-man rotation through the first three weeks of the schedule.
"Drew's path to the major leagues has been relatively quick," Farrell said. "But that's a combination of talent, that's a combination of composure, some emotional maturity.
"As a young pitcher he joins another group of young starters that are here. But we like his strike-throwing ability and his overall stuff and the ability to be able to attack both left-handers and right-handers."
Hutchison, a 15th-round pick of the Blue Jays in the 2009 draft, was pitching in Double-A at New Hampshire where he was 2-1 with a 2.16 earned-run average.
To make room on the 25-man roster, the Blue Jays optioned reliever Evan Crawford to New Hampshire.
To make room on the 40-man roster, pitcher Jesse Litsch, who has a right-shoulder injury, has been transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
