Former Toronto Blue Jays catcher Jeff Mathis now with MiamiMIKE CASSESE/Reuters

Miami Marlins backup catcher Jeff Mathis is out for six weeks with a broken collarbone.

MLB.com reported the injury occurred in the top of the fourth inning of the Marlins 8-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday in Jupiter, Fla. Mathis was clipped by Matt Holliday's foul tip.

Mathis stayed in the game for one more pitch before exiting after experiencing discomfort throwing the ball back to pitcher Brad Hand.

Mathis was in line to back up primary catcher Rob Brantly. Kyle Skipworth or Jake Jefferies will likely fill in as Brantly's backup while Mathis recovers.

Mathis, 29, is batting .198 over his eight-year career in the major leagues.
