The UBC Thunderbirds weathered a mid-game run by the top-ranked Regina Cougars to capture the Canada West women's basketball championship 78-59 on Saturday.

Kris Young led UBC with 18 points while Linday Ledingham countered with 17 points for the runner-up Cougars.

With the victory, their seventh Canada West crown, UBC earns an automatic berth in the CIS women's basketball championship, March 16 to 19 in Calgary.

In other final four action on Saturday the Saskatchewan Huskies held off Fraser Valley 71-65 to capture third place.
