Chris Jones is staying put with the Toronto Argonauts.

The highly-coveted defensive guru has decided to remove his name from consideration for the head-coaching vacancy with the Montreal Alouettes and remain in Toronto, where he just won the 100th Grey Cup with his close friend, head coach Scott Milanovich.

The Argos announced an extension for Jones on Tuesday. He holds the roles of assistant general manager, assistant head coach and defensive co-ordinator.

"After some deliberation, it became apparent that Toronto was the best place for me," said Jones in a statement from the Argos. "We've started something great here and I think that, with the players and coaches we have in place, there is an opportunity to build on our championship and contend for the Grey Cup every year."

In his first year with the Argos, Jones guided a defensive unit that was amongst the top of the league during the regular season in several categories.

"Chris Jones is a proven winner, and his ability to coordinate dominant defences cannot be questioned," said Milanovich. "I believe his time to be a head coach will come sooner rather than later, but I am very thankful, and excited, to have him back this season."

During his 11 years coaching in the CFL with Montreal, Calgary, and Toronto, Jones's teams have never missed the playoffs.
