The Concordia Stingers have been stripped of their only two wins of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football season after an administrative error allowed an ineligible player to suit up for their first four games of the season.
Concordia declared the eligibility violation to both the CIS and the Reseau du sport etudiant du Quebec, which governs varsity athletics in the province.
As a result, Concordia had to forfeit its season-opening win over the Bishop's Gaiters and another victory over the St. Francis-Xavier X-Men. Concordia's record drops to 0-6 after the sanctions.
The Gaiters' record improves to 3-3 while the X-Men move to 2-3.
The RSEQ announced the sanctions, but did not name the offending player. It did state Concordia was in violation of a CIS eligibility article that limits the number of years a student athlete can participate in competition.
The RSEQ said all individual player statistics over the four games, with the exception of the ineligible player, will be retained.
"We recently discovered that an administrative error led to an ineligible student athlete participating in our first four football games this season," Katie Sheahan, Concordia director of recreation and athletics, said in a statement Tuesday.
"Although we are disappointed for the members of our football team who have worked so hard this season, we are fully supportive of the sanctions that have been applied by the CIS and RSEQ."
