Cory Boyd's stay with the Edmonton Eskimos was short and not so sweet.
The former all-star running back was released by the Eskimos on Thursday after spending little more than a month with the CFL team. Boyd had signed with Edmonton after being released by the Toronto Argonauts.
The perennial 1,000-yard rusher never got much of a chance to show his skills once the team re-signed Canadian back, Jerome Messam, following his release in the NFL. The Eskimos also have Hugh Charles, who leads them in rushing with 700 yards and has another 513 in pass receptions.
Edmonton head coach Kavis Reed, who also cut defensive back Ronnie Prude, said in a statement: "Today's move is in no way a reflection of the caliber of play of these young men. This is a consequence of the exceptionally high level of injuries we have sustained – double that of typical years – and this issue has a direct impact on our salary cap management."
In his four games with the Eskimos, Boyd had18 carries for 76 yards and four catches for 40 yards. At the time of his release in Toronto, he was the CFL's leading rusher.
