Shin beats Creamer on ninth playoff hole at Kingsmill

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Jiyai Shin made a two-putt par on the ninth hole of a playoff and beat Paula Creamer to win the Kingsmill Championship, ending the longest playoff between two players in LPGA Tour history.

The players played the 18th hole eight times trying to break the tie on Sunday before darkness forced a suspension of play.

They drew a crowd of several hundred fans Monday morning, and needed just one more hole, the par-4 16th, to settle it.

Creamer's hit her double-break first putt about 5 feet past the hole. She then missed the bending comebacker, the ball hitting the right edge and spinning out. Shin's first putt stopped 3 feet from the cup.

It was the second longest playoff in LPGA history, coming up one hole shy of the 1972 Corpus Christi Civitan Open in which Jo Ann Prentice beat Kathy Whitworth and Sandra Palmer on the 10th extra hole. The previous longest playoff involving two players was Cristie Kerr's victory at the seventh hole over Seol-An Jeon at the 2004 Takefuji Classic.

For Shin, it's her ninth career victory and comes after a nearly two year winless drought, a streak of 31 appearances without a win since the 2010 Mizuno Classic.

The pair will now make the long transatlantic flight to England, which is the site of this week's Women's British Open champion - the final major of the season on the LPGA Tour.

Karine Icher (65) and Danielle Kang (69) tied for third at 14 under. Angela Stanford had a 64 - the best round of the day - match Catriona Matthew (68) at 13 under.

Isabelle Beisiegel of St-Hilaire, Que., shot a final round 71 to finish in a tie for 32nd. Lorie Kane of Charlottetown carded a 69 to finish in a tie for 55th.
