James Hahn wins Rex Hospital Open in playoff

Golf ball in the hole

James Hahn tapped in a short birdie putt on the second playoff hole to beat Scott Parel and win The Rex Hospital Open for his first career Nationwide Tour victory.

"This is amazing. I can't believe I won this golf tournament," said the 30-year-old who started the final round five shots off the lead to shoot a final round 67 and a four day total of 13-under par.

"I did not look at a single board all day," he said. "I didn't even know my own score. They told me I was at 13-under and I should stick around."

With three groups still to finish, Hahn figured somebody would beat his total. In fact, he was preparing to head to the airport for a 5:55 p.m. flight to go back to California where he had a 7 am tee time for Monday's U.S. Open Qualifier.

But, one by one, no one could alter the final outcome. Parel missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the last hole that could have given him the outright win. Third-round leader B.J. Staten also lipped out a birdie putt to tie the leaders. Jim Renner finished with three straight pars to miss the playoff by one.

Renner and Staten finished in a tie for third with Jin Park.

Will Wilcox (66), Monday qualifier Dustin Bray (66) and UNC-Charlotte's Jeff Curl (69) shared sixth place, two shots back.

Stuart Anderson of Sooke, B.C., fired a second straight 70 to finish as the top Canuck, tied for 33rd - his best result of the season.

Ryan Yip of Calgary shot 72 and finished 60th.

With the win, Hahn becomes the eighth first-time winner in 10 Tour events this year.
