Heavy hitters Watson, Johnson to play RBC Canadian Open

Bubba golf is coming to the RBC Canadian Open.

Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Charl Schwartzel and fan-favourite John Daly have all been added to the field for this summer's National Open Golf Championship to be played July 25-28 at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario.

Watson will be making his fifth career appearance at the Canadian Open, and first since 2009. His best result is a tie for 14th at the 2006 event which was played in Hamilton.

"Golf Canada and RBC have really worked hard to elevate that event back up where it belongs as a National Open Championship and I'm excited to come and support them this year," said Watson, the 2012 Masters champion. "My in-laws live just northeast of Toronto so it will also be nice to see some family while I'm there."

Watson's wife Angie is from Markham, Ont. A former basketball player for the Canadian national team, she met Watson while the two attended college at the University of Georgia.

Johnson will be back at the Canadian Open for the first time since 2008 while Schwartzel, also a former Masters champion, has played in each of the last two championships.

"Canadian golf fans have always been very supportive of me," said Johnson. "I'm feeling really good about how my game is rounding into form and am excited to play Glen Abbey in a few weeks."

While Daly has made only four of 11 cuts this year on the PGA Tour, he always seems to be a fan favourite when he plays in Canada. His best result was a fourth place finish in 2001.

"Golf fans love to come out and watch big hitters like Bubba, DJ, and Daly as well as Canada's own Graham DeLaet absolutely crush the golf ball," said tournament director Bill Paul. "I'm sure our heavy hitters announced today as well as previously announced PGA Tour superstars will all be among the crowd favourites at Glen Abbey next month."

Schwartzel, Watson, Johnson and Daly join an impressive list of previously confirmed PGA Tour stars including Matt Kuchar, Luke Donald, defending FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker, Graeme McDowell, Ernie Els, Hunter Mahan and two-time Canadian Open champion Jim Furyk.

DeLaet will headline a list of Canadian PGA Tour players including David Hearn, Brad Fritsch, Stephen Ames and Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Mike Weir, all looking to become the first Canadian since Pat Fletcher in 1954 to win the Canadian Open.
