Sara-Maude Juneau
It was a good week for former LPGA Tour player Sara-Maude Juneau, who climbed 39 spots in the world rankings following a tie for third at the Symetra Tour event in Michigan. The Quebec golfer is attempting to work her way back to the LPGA Tour after failing to earn enough money to retain her card in her rookie campaign last year. The result - her best of the year and fourth top-10 result of the season - moved Juneau up to 11th on the Tour's money list. The top 10 at the end of the year automatically earn their LPGA card for next season.
Fellow Quebecer Maude-Aimee Leblanc, also looking to work her way back up to the LPGA Tour, finished in a tie for fifth at the same event. That enabled her to climb three spots in the world rankings.
Over on the LPGA Tour, Alena Sharp finished tied for 31st at the event in Arkansas. The Hamilton, Ont. golfer was leading after the first day. That result saw her climb 17 places in the world rankings.
Sue Kim finished tied for 47th in Arkansas and climbed 30 spots in the world rankings. The Langley, B.C. player - No. 6 in Canada - has picked up a total of 49 places over the last two weeks.
On the amateur side, Josee Doyon, Valerie Tanguay and Delaney Howson were all competing at the Women's Western Golf Association's National Amateur Championship. Doyon picked up 87 spots in the rankings and moved to No. 12 in Canada after advancing all the way to the semi-finals in match play before losing to eventual tournament winner Mika Liu. The Quebec native, currently ranked second in the Quebec Provincial Order of Merit, is set to be a junior this fall at Kent State.
Howson also had a successful run in the match play portion of the event, losing to eventual tournament runner-up Cammie Gray in the semi-finals. The former Murray State standout climbed 17 spots in the world rankings. Howson is set to become the Graduate Assistant of the Ball State University Women's Golf team while working on her Master's degree in Business Administration this fall.
Tanguay climbed 59 spots in the world rankings and moved back into the top 20 in Canada despite a first round loss in match play after finishing tied for fourth in the stroke play portion of the event.
Over at the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship, Anne-Catherine Tanguay climbed seven spots despite losing in the first round of match play after finishing ninth in the qualifying rounds.
Muni He of Pitt Meadows, B.C., finished tied for 10th at the Rolex Tournament of Champions, one of the two longest running AJGA tournaments. That was good enough for a jump of 27 spots in the world rankings.
Dave Bunker earned the honour of being the biggest mover of the week among the top 20 in Canada. The Woodbridge, Ont. golfer captured the Ontario Mid-Amateur by three strokes. That enabled him to climb 378 spots in the world rankings which vaulted him back into the top 20 at No. 13 in Canada. Bunker, who claimed the Ontario Men's Match Play Championship last month, will join Michael Farrugia and Dean Henry in representing Team Ontario at the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship this September.
