Blackhawks sign Seabrook to five-year deal

The Chicago Blackhawks have locked up another key member of their organization, signing defenceman Brent Seabrook to a US$29-million, five-year contract extension on Sunday.



The 25-year-old has spent his entire NHL career with the Blackhawks after being selected in the first round of the 2003 draft.



"Brent is a very important member of our organization and we are looking forward to him being part of a core group that will be a contender for many years to come," Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said in a statement. "We have been fortunate to have Brent as part of our family since he was a teenager and we are proud to be able to announce this news today."

Seabrook has 33 points (4-29) in 61 games this season. In 452 career NHL games, he's registered 177 points.



"The Blackhawks are the only organization I've ever played for and I've been a part of something very special in Chicago over the last six seasons," said Seabrook. "I'm excited to continue being a part of this group, playing in the United Center and making our fans proud."



The native of Tsawassen, B.C., won won both the Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal with Team Canada last year.



The Blackhawks also have forwards Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa, and defencemen Duncan Keith and Brian Campbell signed to long-term contracts.
