Vancouver Canucks president and general manager Mike Gillis pauses as he speaks to reporters in Vancouver, B.C., on Tuesday.DARRYL DYCK/The Canadian Press

Vancouver Canucks president and general manager Mike Gillis expressed "every bit of confidence" in coach Alain Vigneault and said he is "unsure" of the future of the team's goaltending.

Gillis spoke Tuesday morning after the Canucks collapsed in the first round of the playoffs against the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.

The Canucks have the "foundation" for a championship team, said Gillis, noting he aims to get the team younger, as well as bigger and stronger- while acknowledging such changes will be difficult.

The decision on Vigneault, and Gillis, still rests with team co-owner and chairman Francesco Aquilini.

Gillis said the team peaked this season in January when it won a Stanley Cup-like game against Boston on the road. The Canucks were "somewhat indifferent" late in the season, even as the team won the Presidents' Trophy.

Gillis emphasized his commitment to offence. Teams focused on defence, such as L.A. and the St Louis Blues, have advanced in the playoffs this year.

On goaltending, Gillis praised both Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider. He meets with both men on Tuesday and then assesses what his position is, with the presumption it will be hard to keep both if they both insist on being the unequivocal No 1 goalie.
