Hockey commentator and former coach Don Cherry looks on during the 2011 CHL/NHL top prospects skills competition in Toronto, January 18, 2011.MARK BLINCH

Don Cherry has found a new outlet for his observations on the sport of hockey — Twitter.

The 78-year-old commentator on Hockey Night in Canada's Coach's Corner announced on Thursday that he had joined the social media site.

Cherry made the announcement during an interview with fellow CBC personality George Stroumboulopoulos.

His Twitter handle — @CoachsCornerCBC — had yet to be verified as official by the website late Thursday and no tweets had been posted.

Despite this, the popular and controversial hockey commentator already had hundreds of followers by late Thursday.

The account's bio says that Cherry and Hockey Night in Canada producer Kathy Broderick will be the authors of the tweets.

A parody account using the handle @DonCherryParody has existed for months and has over 8,000 followers.
