Quebec Remparts head coach and co-owner Patrick Roy reacts to the nomination of Michel Therrien as Montreal Canadiens head coach at a news conference Wednesday, June 6, 2012 in Quebec City.

Only in Habs-land does the guy who didn't get the coach's job also feel compelled to do a news conference.

Patrick Roy may have been the popular choice to be the next coach of the Canadiens, but he wasn't the organization's, and that's okay by him – after all, there's always next time.

And when that day comes, it's no disrespect to Michel Therrien to state that it surely will, he'll listen.

"Maybe one day I'd like to be the coach in Montreal. If the opportunity arises, it will have to be an ideal situation where I can have as much fun as I do with the (QMJHL's Quebec) Remparts," he said in Quebec City.

Roy also sought to dispel rumours that he was asking for a say in personnel matters – he is co-owner, GM and coach in Quebec City – saying the discussions didn't go far enough to start talking about specific responsibilities and contract terms.

But he did confirm meeting up with Habs GM Marc Bergevin in Florida for a lengthy face-to-face interview, saying "if I was part of the process it's because I was interested in the job."

Roy also had a long phone interview with Bergevin assistant Rick Dudley, which suggests he was in the running until the late stages of the search, and said that his status as the fan favourite to succeed Randy Cunneyworth "encouraged me to get involved in the process."
