It's a unique award in hockey, given out each year to the player who best demonstrates "the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey."

Typically that means players nominated for the Masterton Trophy have battled through injuries or some tragic personal circumstance, although some branches of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, which votes on the award, have recently tried to steer it away from simply being a "recovery from a gruesome injury" trophy.

Unlike the Hart or Norris trophies, the Masterton gets a nominee from every single NHL team, making for a type of mini-honour for 30 players across the league. Those names are coming out in dribs and drabs lately as teams make their announcements, but it's worthwhile to have them here all in one place.
