Los Angeles Kings forward Kyle Clifford was handed a US$2,756.41 fine by the National Hockey League on Monday for kneeing Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in a game a day earlier.
The fine was the maximum allowable amount under the collective bargaining agreement.
The incident occurred at 7:41 of the first period and no penalty was assessed on the play. Nugent-Hopkins stayed in the game and was later stopped in the shootout by Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.
Anze Kopitar scored in the third round of the shootout to give Los Angeles a 2-1 home victory.
The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
