Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick underwent a "minor surgical procedure" in his back on Thursday, according to the team.
In a brief release, the team said Quick will need a minimum of six weeks to recover after having surgery to to repair a disc frament and an inflammatory cyst that had formed in his back.
According to assistant general manager Ron Hextall, the Kings had been aware of the issue since the start of the summer and that initial therapy to try and correct the ailment "wasn't coming along quite like we hoped".
Hextall added that Quick should be ready in time for the start of training camp, provided "training camp will start on time", a reference to a possible lock out should the NHL not come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement by September 15.
In June, the Kings signed Quick to a new 10-year contract extension worth $58-million. The 26-year-old was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the playoff MVP after helping to lead the Kings to their first Stanley Cup championship.
