Mason Raymond's training camp tryout couldn't have gone any better.

The former Vancouver Canucks winger had two goals and four points in three preseason games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, more than enough to convince GM Dave Nonis to sign him to a one-year, $1-million deal which was officially announced on Monday afternoon.

"Based on Mason's play in the preseason, we feel he fits in well with our group and will have a significant role on our team," Nonis said in a release. "We agreed to terms over the weekend and look forward to him making a strong contribution this season."

Raymond has made $2.275-million or more in all of the last three seasons but was one of several veteran NHLers squeezed by the lowering salary cap and had to settle for a tryout with Toronto.

He is coming off of two disappointing seasons with the Canucks after suffering serious back injury in the 2011 Stanley Cup finals, with a total of only 42 points in 101 games.

With Leafs winger David Clarkson expected to be suspended for the first 10 games of the regular season after leaving the bench during Sunday's brawl against the Buffalo Sabres, Raymond will likely slot into a role in Toronto's top six and try to regain the 25-goal form he had in Vancouver in 2009-10.

Only 28, he brings some additional speed and finesse, something lacking in the Leafs forwards group a little after losing Clarke MacArthur, Mikhail Grabovski and Matt Frattin in the off-season.
