Shawn Horcoff is now captain Horcoff.

The veteran Edmonton Oilers centre was appointed the NHL team's 13th captain this week, replacing Ethan Moreau, who was let go after last season's disheartening 30th-place finish.

This will be Horcoff's 10th season in the NHL. The native of Trail, B.C., has scored 133 goals and 241 assists in 637 career games. He was a key contributor in 2006, when Edmonton advanced to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final and is being counted on to groom young stars Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paajarvi and Taylor Hall.

On Wednesday, Edmonton lent disgruntled veteran defenceman Sheldon Souray to the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

The Oilers open the 2010-11 NHL season at home against the Calgary Flames on Thursday.
