A historic accomplishment for Daniel Alfredsson.

The Ottawa Senators will retire Alfredsson's No. 11 on Dec, 29 when they host the Detroit Red Wings. Alfredsson will become just the second player in club history to receive the honour, the other being No. 8 formerly worn by forward Frank Arthur Finnigan.

"Daniel is an iconic figure in the history of our franchise," owner Eugene Melnyk said in a statement. "Daniel has consistently demonstrated class and excellence throughout his NHL career so it is only fitting his jersey number be retired to hang alongside the No. 8 of legendary Frank Finnigan."

Alfredsson, currently the Senators' senior advisor of hockey operations, played 18 NHL seasons, 17 with Ottawa. He served as the club's captain for 13 seasons (1999-2013) and is its all-time leader in numerous categories, including goals (426), assists (682), points (1,108) playoff games (121), goals (51), assists (49) and points (100).

Alfredsson was a six-time NHL all-star and twice helped Sweden will Olympic hockey medals (gold in 2006, silver in 2014).
