Defenceman Sheldon Souray and goaltender Martin Gerber have both cleared NHL waivers. Now it's up to the Edmonton Oilers to decide what next.

In the case of Gerber, the Oilers are expected to assign him to their AHL affiliate in Oklahoma City. In Souray's case, he could be sent down as well or placed on recallable waivers. If a team claims either Souray or Gerber on recallable waivers it would be on the hook for only half of the player's salary.

For Souray, a team would end up paying $2.7-million for the 34-year-old veteran while the Oilers would have to pay the other $2.7-million.

Souray was not invited to training camp after criticizing the Oilers last season for the way they handled his hand injury. He insisted he was rushed back too soon; the team denied that.

Souray asked to be traded but the Oilers found no teams willing to take on his full salary.
