It's a plotline with more drama than Shakespeare and more twists than a pretzel. Here are some of the main players

Francesco Aquilini Title: Owner Job: After a spectacular divorce trial was avoided with a last-minute settlement, Mr. Aquilini returns his focus to the hockey team, which he oversees closely, including the hiring of the new coach in the summer. As the trial approached: “We’re in a real high-conflict situation here.”

Roberto Luongo Title: Starting goaltender Job: Making people forget about the goaltender the team had anointed as its future and remind everyone why he was not long ago considered among the league’s elite. When he didn’t get traded last winter: “My contract sucks. I’d scrap it if I could right now.”

Henrik Sedin Title: Captain Job: A heavier work load. Still counted on to produce goals and set up his brother Daniel, the twins will now also shoulder penalty-kill duties. On falling short of the Stanley Cup: “We haven’t won anything. We’ve won the regular season, we won the scoring titles, but if you look back at our careers [here], I don’t think you’d read anywhere that we’ve won anything.”

Mike Gillis Title: President/general manager Job: The boss of the hockey team enters his sixth season, with the glory years fading. He promised a “reset” and brought in a new coach but not much in the way of new players. On media critics of the team: “I’d hazard that [other teams] would not endure the same criticism that we endure most of the time.”

John Tortorella Title: Head coach Job: Chief conjurer. The coach has to produce different results with largely the same team. When he was hired: “It’s come to the point with me where I’m kind of being defined as ‘that lunatic.’ I don’t want to be defined that way. I need to make some adjustments.”
