Blue Jays manager John Farrell reacted to Twitter reports out of Boston on Monday about his future in TorontoMike Cassese/Reuters

With just three games left in the regular season schedule and John Farrell is still having to put out brush fires.

The latest involved a broadside from an obscure Boston-based sportswriter who Tweeted on Sunday that sources are telling her that the Blue Jays are willing to let Farrell become the next Red Sox manager because of "friction" between Farrell and team general manager Alex Anthopoulos.

Farrell, in so many words, labelled the comment so much hogwash.

"Those comments are unfounded," Farrell told reporters on Monday before Toronto's game against the Minnesota Twins.

It has been a tough year to be sure for the second-year manager, who has had to try to guide a team that has been crippled by injuries for most of the season.

Farrell is heading into the third and final year of his contract with the Blue Jays and so far the Blue Jays have remained silent on whether or not they are planning on extending the deal.

Farrell said he is planning on honouring the third year of his deal.

He said that rumours are part of the game and it is something you can't control.

"I think it's disrespectful when somebody makes a comment when they don't know what's truly going on on the inside," he said. "That's the most disappointing thing. And I don't know where some people can come off as feeling like they can know what's happening, either between Alex and I or what we would think is happening between the manager the GM elsewhere.

"I think that's just irresponsible with the comments."

Farrell also said that starting pitcher Carlos Villanueva will skip his final start of the season on Tuesday against the Twins.

Farrell said it was not something that Villanueva wanted to hear but the manager added he felt the long season was catching up with his right-hander and he didn't want to risk an unnecessary injury.

Rookie Chad Jenkins will get the start, his third since getting called up.

"We spoke about it and we've been talking about it for the last couple days," Villanueva said. "Obviously I'm a competitor, I want to be out there.

"But with the long season and the last three games not meaning anything to them, for us and playoff contention, they just want to get another look at Jenks. And I'm on board with that."

Villanueva, who will become a free agent at the season's end, will finish with an overall record of 7-7 with a 4.16 ERA.

Edwin Encarnacion will not be in the lineup in Monday's game for Toronto as he is still experiencing discomfort in the back of his shoulder. His status is listed as day to day.
