After replays showed Houston running back Justin Forsett was clearly down before scoring on a long touchdown run, Schwartz threw his challenge flag. Unfortunately for him, all scoring plays are subject to review and his toss nullified any challenge.

GOOD WEEK It’s not so much the Kelly green as his blue and gold that’s in vogue this fall. After Saturday’s 38-0 win over Wake Forest, Brian Kelly, the third-year head coach, has the University of Notre Dame ranked No. 1 in U.S. college football for the first time since 1993. And for those Fighting Irish fans hankering after a lucky charm – or the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – it’s worth noting that four previous Notre Dame coaches all won the national championship in their third year.JEFF HAYNES/Reuters

So people really thought George’s son Hal was going to sell the Yankees? Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation this week secured a 49-per-cent stake in the YES Network, which broadcasts all Bronx Bombers games, for a measly $1.47-billion, along with a five-year increase in the contract to broadcast the games.Julie Jacobson/The Associated Press

GOOD WEEK Jack Taylor, the Grinnell College sophomore, put up 138 points in a 179-104 win over Faith Baptist Bible College on Tuesday, and had the basketball world a-flutter, with LeBron James comparing his output to the 100-point Wilt Chamberlain’s tour de force.Cory Hall/The Associated Press

Still, not everyone was a fan, with ESPN’s Stuart Scott voicing his displeasure on Twitter: “Not a big fan of Jack Taylor’s 138-pts in Grinnell win. He took 108-shots including 71-3’s ... Just say that out loud. Now say ‘team’!” Yes, because team was exactly what Kobe Bryant had in mind when he dropped 81 points on the RaptorsCory Hall/The Associated Press

BAD WEEK With the Tigers getting whupped in the World Series, the dearth of Red Wings hockey and the Pistons continuing their ho-hum ways, the city of Detroit looked to the Lions for a reason to give thanks this November. Fat chance of that as Lions’ head coach Jim Schwartz reacted with all the deliberation of an armchair quarterback, illegally throwing his challenge flag following a scoring play that shouldn’t have stood and ultimately condemning his team to a 0-9 record on Thanksgiving Day since 2003.TIM SHAFFER/Reuters

BAD WEEK Common sense dictates that players choose a spot of rest and relaxation when they’re out injured, but 76ers centre Andrew Bynum knows best – after all, this is the guy who politely turned down all-time leading NBA career scorer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar when the Lakers legend offered to show him the finer points of playing the position.Matt Slocum/The Associated Press

Still, the boneheaded big man decided to go bowling while rehabbing his right knee, and promptly injured the left one. And some say being injury prone is his biggest problem.Sue Ogrocki/The Associated Press
