Andrei Markov of the Montreal Canadiens celebrates a goal for the Habs in the 2008-09 season.Richard Wolowicz

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Andrei Markov says he's not interested in becoming team captain.

Markov called the responsibility a huge one and said Tuesday he just wants to concentrate on his on-ice performance.

A published report said Markov had rejected the captaincy, but both the player and coach Jacques Martin denied he had even been approached.

Markov, 30, has been with the Canadiens for eight seasons.

Martin said management will use training camp to assess the players, although he did not rule out naming alternate captains to replace the departed Saku Koivu.
