Canada won a bronze medal in the men's coxed pair race Saturday at the world rowing championships.

Kai Langerfeld of Parksville, B.C., Peter McClelland of Aurora, Ont., and coxswain Dane Lawson of Brockville, Ont., finished the 2,000-metre race in a time of six minutes 55.33 seconds, holding off a challenge from Italy.

"It felt like we executed our race plan very well," Langerfeld said. "We left everything out on the course."

Belarus won gold in 6:55.33, while France picked up silver in 6:55.93.

"We executed our start just like we wanted to, which put us in a solid third place," McClelland said. "We couldn't have asked for more in the middle and that put us where we wanted to be for the final sprint.

"I give credit to France and Belarus — they were the better boats today."

The lightweight women's quad team was second in the B final to finish eighth overall.

In junior events, the women's four was fourth in the B final and 10th overall. The junior men's double was fourth in the E final.
