American Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil celebrate after their Wimbledon semi-final win
The Canadian content this weekend at Wimbledon increased to two on Friday as Vasek Pospisil and his partner Jack Sock of the United States have advanced to the men's doubles final.
The unseeded duo were straight sets winners over the veteran fifth-seeded team of Leander Paes of India and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 6-4.
Pospisil and Sock are playing together for the first time and may have surprised even themselves with their progress. The fifth-seeded Paes and Stepanek had beaten Toronto's Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia in the quarter-finals a day earlier, preventing what would have been an interesting clash between Davis Cup teammates Pospisil and Nestor.
Pospisil and Sock will next face the defending champion Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, in Saturday's doubles final.
The top-seeded Bryans did not reach the final at any of the last three Grand Slam tournaments - after winning four major titles in a row before that. Left-hander Bob and right-hander Mike have a record 15 Grand Slam doubles titles, including three at Wimbledon.
The 24-year-old from Vancouver is only the third Canadian male to advance to the doubles final, joining Nestor and Grant Connell. He will try to become only the second Canadian male to win a doubles title, after Nestor won back-to-back championships in 2008 and 2009.
"To be honest, I haven't put any emphasis on doubles at all the last two years but I lost early here," Pospisil said after his quarter-finals win over the No. 2 ranked team of Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares. "A Grand Slam is different; when you play Grand Slam doubles you play full out and want to do well."
Much like Milos Raonic and Bouchard, this is Pospisil's best career performance at Wimbledon, having made it all the way to the third round last year in doubles. He was a first round loser in four sets in singles play this year.
Nestor has a chance to make it three Canadians in a finals event as he and Kristina Mladenovic of France will play in a mixed doubles semi-final match on Saturday.
