The premier Olympic event in women's artistic gymnastics is Thursday, and Dominique Pegg of Sarnia, Ont., will be competing alongside superstars of the sport like American Gabby Douglas.
The 18-year-old Pegg takes part in the prestigious individual all-round final two days after finishing a surprise fifth with her fellow Canadians in the team final.
Pegg was 16th in qualifying, the only Canadian to make the top 24 and earn the berth. But one notable athlete controversially won't be there. Since only two athletes per nation can go, U.S. all-round world champion Jordyn Wieber is out after finishing fourth in qualifying, behind her U.S. teammates Douglas and Aly Raisman. Russia's Victoria Komova, the top qualifier, aims to stop the Americans from winning this event for the third consecutive Games.
