Canadian wrestler Martine Dugrenier loses bronze-medal match

Canada's Martine Dugrenier is consoled by her coach after losing to Mongolia's Battsetseg Soronzonbold in the women's freestyle 63kg weight category at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England, Wednesday August 8/2012.

For a second straight Games, Montreal's Martine Dugrenier just barely missed out on a bronze medal in the 63-kilogram weight class.

Dugrenier, a 32-year-old teacher, lost in the bronze medal final to Mongolia's Battsetseg Soronzonbold, four years after losing a heart-breaking fight in the repechage round and missing her shot to wrestle for bronze.

Since the 2008 Games, Dugrenier went up a weight class and won three world championships in the 67-kilogram weight class. But she had to come down in weight again for the Games, because that is not one of the classes that competes in the Olympics.

The Canadian drew two-time Olympic champion Kaori Icho from Japan for her first-round fight on Wednesday and suffered a tight loss. Dugrenier then had to wait through an agonizingly long afternoon to see if Icho would wrestle into the gold medal final, which she did. That consequently landed Dugrenier into the repechage tournament that fights for bronze.

In the repechage, Dugrenier beat Sweden's Henna Johnansson, having to win two rounds in the fight after losing the first round. The victory put her into the bronze medal final.

In the bronze medal fight, 22-year-old Soronzonbold finished off Dugrenier in two rounds.
