Toronto FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei is expected to be out of the lineup for eight to 10 weeks after breaking his left leg in a freak training accident.

The vice-captain suffered the injury Friday morning during a wet training game at BMO Field.

Frei, who has been battling Milos Kocic for the starting position, appeared to catch his leg in the grass while going after a ball.

The team says Frei suffered a broken fibula and will undergo an MRI exam next week to determine whether surgery is required.

The injury came six days after captain Torsten Frings limped out of the season-opening loss in Seattle with a strained hamstring.

Kocic is expected to start today's game against the visiting San Jose Earthquakes.
