Team Canada's retro uniforms get thumbs up

Former Canadian international soccer player Kara Lang (left) and Toronto FC defender Doneil Henry model the retro uniform that the Canadian men's and women's soccer teams will wear for one game apiece in June to mark the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Soccer Association, in Toronto, Thursday, May 10, 2012.

Ashtone Morgan was quick to give Canada's retro centennial soccer uniforms a thumbs-up.

"Nice, really nice," said Morgan.

How can you go wrong with a red Maple Leaf over the heart, added the Toronto FC and Canadian international defender.

The limited-edition Umbro kit, unveiled Thursday at BMO Field, is part of the Canadian Soccer Association's centennial celebrations.

The uniforms will be worn by the Canadian men's team for its June 3 friendly against the U.S. at BMO Field. The Canadian women will wear it June 30 when they play the U.S. at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.

Umbro says the uniforms were inspired by the kit worn by Canada in its first home international, a 1-0 win over the U.S. on June 27, 1925, at Alexandra Park in Montreal.

The jersey is royal blue with white trim, with 1912 inscribed on the back of the collar. The shorts are white, with blue-and-white socks completing the ensemble.

"Definitely different, I like it," said Toronto FC defender Doneil Henry, who played for Canada earlier this year in Olympic qualifying.

"I think it's good to represent our heritage, our roots and where we're coming from," he added.

Other CSA centennial plans ahead of the June 2 Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame induction ceremony include the top-10 moments in Canadian soccer history and teams of the first half-century and second-half century, as chosen by the Hall of Fame.

Soccer fans will then be able to go online to choose the best all-time Canadian men's and women's teams.
