Bianca Andreescu advanced to the third round of the Australian Open’s qualifying draw on Thursday while fellow Canadian Peter Polansky fell in the final round but still has a chance to play in the main draw.

Andreescu, from Mississauga, dispatched Valentini Grammatikopoulou of Greece 6-4, 6-1 in her second round match.

Polansky, from Thornhill, Ont., lost to Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-6, 6-4 in the third round.

Polansky now has to wait and see if he’ll be a “lucky loser” for the fifth-straight Grand Slam, meaning he could be randomly selected to play in the main draw if a spot opens up because of a withdrawal.

Andreescu plays Tereza Smitkova of the Czech Republic next for a spot in the main draw.
