Apple unveiled a host of updates to its laptops and operating systems at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco on Monday. The announcements included faster, lighter additions to the MacBook Air and Pro lineups, as well as the introduction of a new high-end, "next-generation" MacBook Pro with the same Retina display featured on the latest iPad and iPhones. All of the new hardware is immediately available, the company said.
On the operating system side, Apple detailed Mountain Lion, the updated operating system for Mac computers that will be available in July. Mountain Lion integrates better with iCloud, where users will be able to store documents online and access them from the device of their choice. The update will also make it easier to share media, with Facebook and Twitter better integrated into photo and web functions.
Lastly, the company detailed iOS 6, the update coming to iPads, iPods and iPhones in the fall. It will support iPhones released since 2009, as well as last year's and this year's iPad models. It will also work with newer iPod Touch devices.
The software will similarly improve sharing functions but also feature a new Maps app that has been built from the ground up by Apple, rather than Google. Apple's Maps will feature 3D views and turn-by-turn navigation. Siri will also be better integrated, so users will be able to ask their phone for driving directions. The voice feature is also having its functionality expanded to a number of new countries, including Canada.
