WestJet converts to metric time

"We found some guests were frustrated with a.m. and p.m."

In order to serve customers better, WestJet has decided to switch all flight schedules to metric time. The conversion is simple: Take your departure time (in the 24-hour clock), multiply the hour by 60, add the minutes, and then divide by 1.44.

TTC's grand new funding idea

The Toronto Transit Commission has a grand new revenue model that will help squeeze much-needed funds out of little-used stations such as Chester, Bessarion, Old Mill, and Summerhill. "Well, this napkin looks very good," Brad Ross, the TTC's head of communications, said of the new plan.

Google launches 'shelfie' for Gmail

On the 10-year anniversary of Google's e-mail software, the Internet giant has added a new personalized layer to your inbox. "As the pioneering platform for selfies, Gmail is committed to being at the forefront of innovation in the selfie space."

(It should be noted that back in 2004, some originally thought Gmail itself was a joke.)

The Calgary Sun gets a new owner

Touted as "the most popular mayor in the history of mayordom," The Calgary Sun newspaper has a new publisher/owner/editor: Naheed Nenshi.

CERN adopts Comic Sans as official font

To the consternation of designers and typographers everywhere, the European research organization CERN has switched entirely to Comic Sans

"This is an important year for CERN and we wanted to make a bold visual statement," says CERN Head of Communications James Gillies.
