Toronto City Council voted overwhelmingly yesterday not to act on contentious plans to rename city streets in order to eliminate duplicates and triplicates created by amalgamation.

The $2-million plans, which angered many residents but were deemed necessary by Bell Canada to keep the 911 system up to date, were quashed by a motion from Etobicoke-Centre Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby.

The decision was made after word from the City of Hamilton that Bell had accepted its refusal to eliminate its duplicate street names.

Toronto officials will continue to hold talks with Bell to work out a solution, works committee chairwoman Jane Pitfield said.

Ontario 911 manager Judy Tottman said Bell's policy remains that every street should have its own unique name within a given municipality.

The utility's reasoning is to eliminate any chance of a delay caused by confusion over the location.
